GE outsourcing jobs, and new Kindred building advances

Latest business news focused on big Louisville employers; updated at 5:25 p.m.

HUMANA declared a regular quarterly dividend of 29 cents a share, payable July 29 to stockholders of record June 30. Also, the healthcare giant said it will continue its financial support of Actors Theatre’s festival of new plays through 2019; Humana has been the lead underwriter for 37 years. 

GE plans to outsource its distribution operation at Appliance Park, a move that would affect about 200 union jobs (WDRB). The announcement followed the release of a letter today that contained uncharacteristically harsh criticism of the performance of workers (CJ).

KINDRED was issued four building permits by the city yesterday, indicating it’s ready to start work on its planned $36 million office building in the Theater Square commercial district on Fourth Street near the Brown Hotel (CJ). The expansion will accommodate up to 500 new employees, and follows Kindred’s October 2014 purchase of Gentiva, an Atlanta-based home health and hospice provider (AJC).

PNC will vacate the PNC Plaza Tower on Jefferson Street, moving 300 employees to the National City Tower as the bank consolidates its combined 600 downtown employees in one place. No word on what will happen to PNC Plaza naming rights (WDRB).

PAPA JOHN’S has now eliminated all  high-fructose corn syrup from its menu, a plan first announced in June (press release). The ingredient was one of 14 the company said it would remove in June as it reinforced its “better ingredients, better pizza” slogan (Food Business News).

Schnatter’s PR war with Domino’s rises, and Heine’s got a new home

PAPA JOHN’S founder John Schnatter threw shade at Domino’s newly launched delivery vehicle, prompting howls from financial news site The Street.

HEINE BROS. is moving its headquarters to Portland, where it will occupy 16,000 square feet in the Portland Warehouse District at 1301 W. Main St. by late summer. The 13-store chain is now based above the Crescent Hill store. HQ has 15 employees (CJ). Heine hopes to open two more stores by the end of the year (Business First). The company was founded in 1994 with the original store in the Highlands, according to Heine’s about. Co-founder Gary Heine left in 2011, selling his stake to Chuck Schnatter, whose brother is the Papa John’s founder. Chuck left Papa in 2010. Heine’s Twitter feed, which includes this one; I’m pretty sure Heine Photoshopped its trade dress into that photo of the new HQ.

PAPA JOHN’s and PIZZA HUT: As consumers get more comfortable with autonomous delivery — robots to you and me — a restaurant industry that already uses cutting edge logistics services could start adding delivery robots in the coming decade. Indeed, Domino’s — arch rival to Papa John’s and Pizza Hut — is already giving a trial run to its “DRU” robot in Australia; watch Domino’s Robotic Unit video. DRU follows Domino’s introduction last October of a delivery van equipped with a special warming oven that’s easily accessed from outside.

TEXAS ROADHOUSE is adding bee hives at its corporate offices on Dutchmans Lane, a symbolic step drawing attention to the nation’s beleaguered bee colonies. (C-J).

Former Papa franchiser gets Innocents home job; predecessor earned $273K

PAPA JOHN’S: A former franchise owner of the pizza chain has been named CEO of the Home of the Innocents, which serves neglected and medically fragile children. Paul Robinson owned and operated 19 Papa John’s Pizza franchises in Florida, since been sold. His predecessor, Gordon Brown, is retiring. The agency didn’t say what Robinson would be paid; Brown got $273,000 in fiscal 2014, according to Guidestar’s latest tax return. Annual expenses were $31.2 million that year. The Home’s board of directors. Papa John’s itself has had a tough year; at $55, shares are down more than 9% vs. a 1% dip in the S&P 500. GE‘s counter-punch against Democratic White House candidate Bernie Sanders deemed “ill-advised.” Sanders had slammed GE for tax avoidance as an example of corporate greed.
