The Gheens Foundation owes its existence in part to candy. Established in 1957 by C. Edwin and Mary Jo Gheens to pursue their interests in education, religious programs and human services, it’s now one of Kentucky’s biggest charitable foundations.
Mr. Gheens, a Louisville native who died in 1961, owned a large, successful candy manufacturing company in the city. When his wife died in 1982, their foundation’s assets had grown to $23 million; today, they total $145 million, according to the foundation. Since its inception, Gheens has made grants totaling $105 million.
The foundation’s office is at 401 West Main St., and the phone number is 502-584-4650.
