About Boulevard’s Publisher

Boulevard is written by me: Jim Hopkins, a longtime journalist who wrote the award-winning Gannett Blog. I’ve been a business news editor and reporter for newspapers across the country. They included The Courier-Journal, where I was an investigative reporter in 1996-2000, and USA Today, where I covered entrepreneurs in 2000-2007 from the paper’s San Francisco Bureau.

In 2008, I started Gannett Blog to focus on a single subject: the Gannett Co., which owns the Courier-Journal and more than 100 other newspapers. Within a year, its audience soared to 30,000 readers posting thousands of comments and racking up 300,000 monthly page views. The site’s breaking news coverage and authoritative analysis became an industry must-read for other media reporters at The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and Columbia Journalism Review.

In 2011, in a competition including The New Yorker magazine and Vanity Fair, Gannett Blog won a prestigious Mirror Award for Best Single Article in Digital Media for an investigation into questionable spending at the Freedom Forum foundation in Washington.

I retired Gannett Blog in 2014 to pursue the business and culture news website you’re reading now; I launched it on Aug. 1, 2016.

A 1985 graduate of Brown University, I’ve interviewed some of the world’s most influential business leaders, from Walmart’s Sam Walton to eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, magazine publisher Hugh Hefner and billionaire Donald Trump.

Welcome to Boulevard!
