Whoosh! Imagine how much we spend on toilet paper every year

Always looking for a bargain, Boulevard bought a 24-pack of Charmin Basic toilet paper today at ValuMarket on Bardstown Road in the Highlands. Cost: $11.99, after a $1 savings for using our frequent-shopper card. Because we love numbers, that made us wonder how much Louisvillians spend every year on TP.

Here’s the math: Americans use an average of 23.6 rolls per person each year, according to The New York Times. Louisville’s population is now around 613,000 residents. Boulevard spent 50 cents per roll today, which we’re guessing is at the low end of the price range, since Charmin Basic is a no-frills brand.

The bottom line: 613,000 residents would use 14,466,800 rolls, at an annual cost of $7,233,400. You’re welcome!

Louisville strip clubs and Attorney General Beshear are kicking sex traffickers to the curb

That’s according to a just-published story in LEO, which says a nationwide group, Club Owners Against Sex Trafficking, is training club operators and employees to recognize when someone is the victim of this modern-day slavery. The group includes PT’s Showclub on Market Street.

“People assume we must be involved, but we’re not,” PT’s Brian Franson told the weekly. “In fact, we’re on the lookout for human trafficking.”

And Attorney General Andy Beshear wants everyone to be on guard during Derby Week. “The Derby is one of the greatest sporting events in the world and one all Kentuckians can take great pride in,” Beshear said in a statement. “But unfortunately, there are individuals who use large sporting events like the Derby to traffic children and adults for sex and labor.”

American Pharoah is already a $30 million champ at the stud life, too

51Kn4GpKAfL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_At $200,000 per “date,” The New York Times says today, the Triple Crown-winner’s earning owners Ashford Stud up to $600,000 a day — a $30 million annual haul — over the course of the five-month breeding season. The story is by long-time racing writer Joe Drape, whose book about the horse was published late last month; that’s the cover, left.

Time clockBoulevard reports extensively on executive pay at big local employers. But we also look at what folks are making down in the trenches, sometimes for very peculiar work. Check out this recent example from Craigslist’s creative gigs help-wanted listings in Louisville.

The job: Foot model

The description: If you’d like to make some extra cash posing your feet for a photography project let me know. Any type welcome; high arches are a plus.

What it pays: $200 to $400.

Boulevard wonders whether that’s per hour; the ad doesn’t say.

Bonfire of the vanity: A sneak peek at this year’s hottest Derby party venue

Steve Wilson
Wilson

21c Museum Hotel co-owner Steve Wilson took The Courier-Journal on an inside-the-hotel tour of where Vanity Fair magazine will hold its first Derby party, Friday night. But unlike other Derby events (we’re looking at you, Barnstable-Brown), the upmarket glossy famous for its Oscar party won’t be disclosing the guest list.

Still, everyone else can watch guests arrive on the black (yes) carpet, starting at 8 p.m. (Side note: Wilson says he’s dreaming of opening a 21c in Havana, now that the U.S. is moving toward normalizing relations.) Here’s the CJ story, and a tour video.
